    Forget the Mat

Sometimes it’s best to ditch the mat, and embrace the moment. We have found this to be true, especially with kids who struggle with mental flexibility. If they don’t have a mat, they are unlikely to generalize what they learn in yoga, and appropriate it to daily life. So, feel free to leave the mat rolled and sink your toes into the grass.

The huge benefit of yoga off the mat is that you can practice yoga anytime, anywhere. If you take your child to a birthday party and they become overwhelmed and overstimulated, step outside and do some yoga. If your child is having a rough time behaviorally at school, they can take a yoga break. Classroom teachers can stop and lead some yoga, without rolling out the mats. Yoga can recalibrate student behavior and productivity in a way that is fun for all.

If you’re worried about slipping and sliding all over the place, keep shoes on for quick yoga breaks on smooth surfaces. We are not bound to traditional yoga conventions, there is nothing wrong with mixing it up – especially if your goal is self regulation. Watch and see how yoga practice can be applied to all areas of your child’s life, and see where you can forget the mat.
